WALKING IN PERTHSHIRE

Loch Turret by Crieff
Distance 6 miles

Enclosed deep in the mountains at the head of Glen Turret, Loch Turret is a reservoir approximately 3 miles in length.

In poor weather the glen can seem particularly uninviting, even foreboding, but with the bulk of Ben Chonzie to the west and Choineachain Hill to the east, it is sheltered from most winds. Views down to Strathearn are excellent. Water from this Loch is used to create the Glenturret whisky.

To get there, head for Glen Turret distillery from Crieff. Continue a few hundred yards beyond that to where the road forks and there is a small sign for Loch Turret. The road turns single track here and winds its way up the Glen for a few miles. Park in the car park at the end of the road.

Describing the walk couldn't be simpler. Follow the track up the east side of the loch, cross the river at the top and return down the west side, crossing the dam before returning to the car park. The track up the east side is good, but on the west side it can be indistinct and mucky in places.
