Smelly Sandals - eliminate sandal odour
Came across this product called Paxton's Sandal Saver today, a clever little potion at GBP5.99 that claims to eliminate sandal odour, even on leather sandals. I threw out a 70 quid pair of Timberland sandals last year because the leather under the foot just wouldn't stop stinking. I wonder if it would have cured that. Oh well.
Are roller blades the next step in mountain footwear?
A Southampton man has become the first to roller blade up Ben Nevis. Terry Hammond undertook the challenge to highlight the dangers of long-term cannabis smoking leading to schizophrenia. His son had developed the disease after long-term cannabis use.
Terry used rough terrain blades with six inch wheels. Full story at the bbc: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/hampshire/4187676.stm Friday, August 26, 2005 World Youth Climbing Championships 2005
Last year I was lucky enough to stumble into Ratho Quarry when the youth climbing championships were on. I had no idea it was happening but was enthralled when I got there. These youngsters could out-climb Spiderman. The speed they went up the walls was unbelievable. It was a huge gathering of remarkable talent that will hopefully go on as they grow up to push the boundaries of outdoors climbing even further.
So I thought I'd maybe go this year to see it again. Er, no. This years championships are in Beijing. This weekend to be precise. There are a few Scot's in the British team, one sporting a rather patriotic haircut. See the team here: http://www.mountaineering-scotland.org.uk/sports/worldyouth05.html. Anyway, good luck to the British team this year. You can follow the results at this website: www.uiaaclimbing.com Tuesday, August 16, 2005 Better online payments for outdoors gear
Oh yes, and now the corporate bit...
Our outdoors shop has just been updated with a new payment system to make the whole checkout process a lot less of a pain in the behind. We used to take payment by paypal and for some customers it just wouldn't work. That's in the past now and I feel like the website is all grown up. Payments should be a breeze. That Berghaus base layer rocks
A couple of posts ago I mentioned I'd been given a Berghaus base layer t-shirt. I have to say it's the best one I've had. I tried to get all sweaty but just couldn't - not just cos I was being lazy either. I've had Helly Hansen, Craghoppers and North Cape tops but this one just beat them hands down. If I can find the swing tag to tell you what model it is I will post it here. The only drawback is that it looks a little like a star trek top, though some people might see that as a bonus!
Wednesday, August 03, 2005 Turn a walking pole into an ice axe
This autumn, Grivel are releasing a neat little add on to stick on top of a walking pole to turn it into an ice axe. What it appears to do is replace the normal handle of your ice axe with the new one that includes a (fold out?) ice pick. Looks useful for self arrest or for daggering on steep ground. No adze though so not suitable for cutting steps. I still like to cut steps from time to time just to keep my eye in - it just feels so retro.
Go to the product news bit and look for the "Condor" www.grivel.com Tuesday, August 02, 2005 Berghaus Base Layer
It was our anniversary recently and Mrs C bought me a lovely Berghaus base layer wicking T-shirt. I have still to put it to use but will report back with just how well it works.
