Camping with a baby
Wow, what a week last week - some of the best weather of the year, and also some of the worst as it happens. We took our first long camping trip with the baby and it was a learning experience. Wisely, we decided to keep to beaches on the east coast of Scotland to avoid the midges. The baby seemed to enjoy the experience and took a particular liking to hitting the gas bottle with various acoutrements. We had to put an end to that when he started hitting the gas bottle with a lighter though - it seemed to be giving him a little too much freedom.
Boyed by our success we headed to the west coast where we were sure the breeze would keep the midges at bay. It did and then some. After less than 24 hours in what seemed to be an atlantic storm in Gairloch, we gave up and headed back east. There were only 4 tents left in the massive campsite at Big Sand and two of them were blowing flat to the ground. Ours is intact though and ready to fight another day.
We're all dried out now and back to work. Hoping for another northerly adventure soon.

How old is the baby? I am taking my 7 month old camping for the first time in a few weeks and am a little nervous! Any tips?

Our baby was 10 months and had not been crawling too long. The biggest problem was that we took all our food and cooking equipment in large open boxes. This was a magnet to the baby and we were constantly on guard to stop him getting at the knives, eggs, booze etc! Large boxes with lids next time I think.

Also because of the light, it was very difficult to get him to sleep during the daytime, and also in the evening. Some people have suggested putting a dark duvet cover over the top of the baby bedroom or travel cot in the tent to cut down the light, but we ended up having to plan our days so that we were always in the car for an hour or two around his lunchtime nap as he always gets to sleep in the car.

Hope that helps a bit, and good luck with your camping trip.

Any tips for keeping a baby warm at night? We are taking our three months old camping just for one night and my only concern is how to make sure he doesn't get really cold at night.

We used one of the Babygro baby sleeping bags with blankets over the top. It stops them kicking off their covers. There are a lot of people talking about taking babies camping in the forums at www.ukcampsite.co.uk and that has been suggested a couple of times there too.
Another thing you might consider is to get an Electric Hook-Up on your tent pitch. If the campsite provides this it costs usually around 2 quid extra each night and means you can take a small fan heater with you to keep your tent warm, or even a camping fridge to keep any milk/beer cool.
